RV Buying Guide: Used vs. New RV’s

Gazing at the sparkling paint job, Eva could suddenly relate to the “deer in headlights” analogy.

But in that same instant her mind was flooded by a personal horror story.  Hadn’t her friend Stacy regretted purchasing that new RV?

But on the other hand, going the used route wasn’t clear cut either.

What had seemed like an easy decision minutes ago was now clouded by doubt.

Any major purchase can leave your head spinning, so let’s see if we can’t bring some clarity for you.

Used RV Buying Guide

Our aim in this RV buying guide is to present the good, the bad, and the ugly of both sides.  After that, the decision rests in your capable hands.

To begin, we’ll look at pluses and minuses of procuring a used motorhome.  A measured approach to this major selection will take an up front time investment…but will pay dividends later.

And expect those dividends to come in the form of joy, natural beauty, and adventure!

Positives:

  • Relaxed sales environment
  • Upgrades already installed
  • Economical insurance
  • Possible camping hookups and extras
  • Early manufacturer kinks fixed by seller

How much of a bummer would it be if you arrive at that first campsite only to realize you don’t have a leveling jack?  This can be an afterthought when the seller already has it installed along with other camp ready features.

Negatives:

  • Lack of warranty
  • Renovation may be expensive
  • Missed hidden issues during exterior inspection
  • Used facilities and sleeping quarters

Inspect the RV from all angles, and seek professional help if you’re unsure what to look for.  An RV inspector or knowledgeable friend can fill this role.

Certify all systems are in working order, from the water pump to the furnace and everything in between.

First time buyers may want to lean more towards this route.  Why?

It’ll be the money-saving choice, just be sure to go through a dealer.

New RV Buying Guide

Since we’ve already given you reasons to consider a pre-owned motorhome, it’s time to address your other option.

Everyone loves the word “new” regardless of the product, but weighing this decision is wise.

Positives:

  • Additional financing options via dealer
  • Warranty for applicable repairs
  • Advanced technology
  • Customizable
  • All parts in top condition

Especially in the area of apps and navigation, advances in other industries have opened up possibilities for RV enthusiasts.  Especially for planners, up to date tech leads to fun vacations!

A warranty is something that makes a man or woman feel warm and fuzzy inside.

You almost feel like you’re untouchable under this umbrella.  This extra perk can come in really handy, even we can admit that!

Negatives:

  • Greater insurance premiums
  • More expensive
  • Some customization only available outside the manufacturer
  • May require investing in a towing vehicle

Sometimes that look you’re going for will require research and extra expenses after purchase.  Unless you budgeted for this, prepare for some adjustments to your lifestyle.

Maybe you’re determined to purchase new, but what class is right for you?  Read our blog on the different options.

By now, you’ve been equipped with solid information to inform your decision.  O wait, what about insuring this amazing new vehicle?
